While Doctor, Modikwe, and Realeboga built the floor and walls of the pit latrine, ....
... the Ladies of HBC filled in the sand around the base, making the yard neat and even again. One would never know there had been a giant hole in the ground just a few days before.
Then, Keba, Kgomotso, and a new volunteer went to the riverbed to get more sand for mortar. The types of sand used for mortar vs concrete differ, and the difference is important. Riverbed sand is used for smooth mortar, soil-type sand is used for the rougher "concrete" and bricks. Either way, the labor of getting the sand is backbreaking work. First, the sand is chipped away at the edges of the riverbed. Then, the sand is thrown uphill, over the bank, and into the bed of the truck.
YOU try throwing shovelfuls of heavy sand over your head for a few hours in the hot sun!
The lazy cow didn't help at all.
Then, the boys had the relatively easier task of unloading the sand from the back of the truck.
